The receipts you actually need to keep

Not every coffee. A plain guide to what the IRS asks for.

You need records that show what you paid, when, to whom and why it was for the business. A bank or card statement covers most of that. A receipt adds the what.

Always keep

Receipts for lodging, anything over $75, gifts, and meals, where you should also note who you met and why. Keep records for at least three years after you file, and six if you ever underreported income by a large amount.
